“Todd’s autobiographical, motivational book provides a short guide to finding the right vocation in life.

The author begins with a quote from Deepak Chopra: “If you could be anything in life, no fear, no obstacles, what would that be?” The author’s answer is simple: she would be an artist. And while that answer seems simple enough, Todd goes on to outline how getting to such a position has been a lifelong process. From living four-plus years as a nonworking wife to earning a doctorate and teaching at the college level, her path to following her dream has not been a direct or easy one. As she explains, “I’ve discovered that once you’ve realized your Purpose in life and who your True Self is supposed to be, it’s really difficult to ignore that little voice inside your heart always urging and pulling you toward your life’s Path.” Combining her paintings and text from corresponding life events, the author reveals the ways she has tried, and sometimes failed, to shape her life the way she wanted it. The paintings tend to feature women with long gazes, such as “Inner Beauty Blooming,” which shows a bright pink flower with a female face at the center of the petals. Such pictures, although a little obvious in terms of their message, give the book a unique angle on the realizing-your-purpose genre. A late chapter concludes with words of encouragement: “Expect miracles to occur when you say YES! to living your Purpose.” The entire affair is brief (fewer than a hundred pages) and full of such optimism. A worksheet at the end allows readers to more thoroughly examine their own paths. The cheerfulness is contagious if simplistic.

Sunny motivational fare.”

Unstuck: One Heroine’s Journey of Art & the Courage to Live on Purpose

“Participate in the transformation of a woman as she grows and progressively becomes more and more of who she was meant to be, one painting at a time.” –Dorothy A. Martin-Neville, PhD, Coach/Mentor

Unstuck: One Heroine’s Journey of Art and the Courage to Live on Purpose is a visual memoir about art and the boldness to make life-altering transitions. Art has always been present in Vicki Todd’s life, from answering “an artist” at the age of six when the Little Miss Happy beauty-contest judge asked what she wanted to be when she grew up to oil painting in her Grandmother’s china shop in Happy, Texas. Art was a fun hobby. Then Vicki’s view of art forever changed. In 1998, Vicki was a nonworking wife in a failing marriage who had just lost a baby she wasn’t meant to conceive. The Universe sent her a Call to Adventure that led to earning a doctorate degree, divorce, and moving from Texas to Connecticut solo to begin a new life as a university professor. During this tumultuous period, Vicki found returning to art was a purging emotional release. She began painting a visual diary of what was happening in her life—a visual memoir. Vicki realized via meditation in 2013 that her life’s Purpose is to be an artist who uses her portraits to inspire others to follow their own Calling. She knew it was time to evolve once again. Could she resign from her eleven-year tenured professor position to follow her bliss of art? Or would she play small, keep her secure job, and allow her soul to suffer? Unstuck tells the story of her journey … so far.
